How to Choose NAND Flash Chips for Industrial-grade Storage Cards: SLC vs. MLC vs. TLC

NAND flash chips are the core of industrial-grade storage cards, directly determining their lifespan, stability, and cost. There are three main types of NAND flash chips: SLC (Single-Level Cell), MLC (Multi-Level Cell), and TLC (Triple-Level Cell), each with distinct performance characteristics suitable for different industrial scenarios.

SLC chips store one bit of data per memory cell, featuring a simple structure and excellent stability. They offer a P/E cycle count of 60,000 to 100,000 times, low latency, and strong resistance to electromagnetic interference. These advantages make SLC chips ideal for critical applications such as rail transit, medical equipment, and military electronics. However, their high manufacturing cost—2-3 times that of MLC chips—limits their use in cost-sensitive scenarios.

MLC chips store two bits of data per cell, balancing performance and cost. With a P/E cycle count of 3,000 to 5,000 times, they meet the needs of most industrial scenarios, including industrial monitoring, smart meters, and IoT gateways. MLC chips provide reliable data transmission speed and stability at a reasonable price, becoming the mainstream choice for general industrial applications. TLC chips store three bits of data per cell, offering the lowest cost but the shortest lifespan (500-3,000 P/E cycles). They are only suitable for non-critical auxiliary scenarios such as temporary data caching and log storage, as their stability degrades significantly under high-frequency read/write operations.

When selecting NAND flash chips, it is crucial to calculate the theoretical lifespan based on daily write volume. For high-frequency write scenarios like subway gates and production line PLCs, SLC chips are preferred. For general industrial applications, MLC chips strike a perfect balance. TLC chips should be used cautiously and avoided in extreme environments or critical systems.
